Meaning
Growing, increasing. The name was borne by the son of Siddhartha, a chief of Kundapura, Vardhamma Mahavira (c. 599-526 B.C.). At the age of twenty-eight, he forsook the world, including his wife and daughter, and spent the next twelve years as a naked ascetic. He became the head of an order of ascetics in Magadha and Anga, and a leader of the Jain religion, which promoted a highly moral, nonmaterialistic lifestyle. Var: Vardhaman. (VARD-HAM-MAH)
