Meanings: Italian form of the Germanic Humbert, a compound name composed of the elements hun (bear cub) and beraht (bright, famous). The name was borne by the ancestor of the Royal House of Savoy, Umberto delle Bianchemani, and more recently by the last Italian king. Umberto II (190483) succeeded to the throne in 1946 following his father’s abdication, but reigned only two months.
