Teiresias Name meanings & History
Teiresias means "he who observes" in Greek. In Greek mythology, Teiresias was a blind prophet who had the gift of prophecy and was consulted by various heroes like Odysseus and Oedipus. Possibly derived from Greek τεῖρος (teiros) "constellations, heavenly signs" and εἴδω (eidô) "to see". This was the name of a blind seer who appears in many Greek myths. Due to objecting the goddess Hera in a debate with her husband Zeus, he lost his eyesight, but was given the ability to see into the future by Zeus. His most noteworthy appearances were in Homer's 'Odyssey', several of Sophokles' opus as well as Ovid's 'Metamorphoses'. Teiresias is commonly used as a first name.
