This was the name of the Cherokee man (also known as George Guess) who devised the Cherokee writing system in the 19th century. Sequoyah is used as a first name for both boys and girls.

Sequoyah was a famous Cherokee leader, inventor, and educator who created the Cherokee syllabary. Other famous people with this name include the musician Sequoyah Murray and the artist Sequoyah Aono.

2.) SEQUOYAH (Male)

Meanings: Derived from the Cherokee tsikwaya (sparrow, principal bird). The name was borne by the inventor of the Cherokee Syllabary. He and his daughter, Ahyoka, spent years developing the system, beginning first with pictures for all the words. At one point, he was accused of practicing witchcraft and all of his pictures were burned. He persevered, and in place of the impractical pictures, developed a syllabary of eighty-six characters. His tribe became the first north of Mexico to have its own system of written communication. He died in Mexico, seeking the “lost Cherokee.” (SEH-KOY-YAH)
