Saimdang Name meanings & History
Saimdang is composed of two Korean words 'saim' meaning poetry and 'dang' meaning a place to reside. Hence, Saimdang means 'the residence of poetry'. Deriving from the Sino-Korean elements 師 (sa), meaning "teacher, master", 任 (im) meaning "trust to, rely on", and 堂 (dang) meaning "hall". This was the nomme de plume of a prominent Joseon era artist, calligraphist, and poet, who was the mother of the Korean Confucian scholar Yi I. Saimdang is used primarily as a first name for baby girls in Korea.
