Usage/Origins
Meaning
Compound name composed from the Sanskrit rama (pleasing) and ananda (happiness, joy): hence, “happiness and joy are pleasing.” The name was borne by a great spiritual leader (1400-70) who preached his philosophy of one personal god (Rama) in Hindi, the common language of the people. He maintained that by being devoted to and worshiping Rama, one could attain salvation after death. His belief in equality for all and his opposition to casteism led to a loosening of the rigid social system. Short: Rama. (RAH-MAH-NAN-DAH)
