Orthros
Ὄρθρος(Ancient Greek)
Orthros Name meanings & History
Orthros was a two-headed dog in the Greek myth, commonly known as the guard dog of Geryon, a giant who lived on the island of Erytheia. From Greek ὄρθρος (orthros) meaning "the time just before daybreak, early dawn, cock-crow". He was a mythological two-headed watchdog, a brother of Cerberus and son of the monster Echidna, that kept the herds of Geryon on the island Erytheia, and was there killed by Herakles. Orthros was also the father to the Sphinx and the Nemean Lion. The character's name is variously given as Orthros and Orthos (Greek ὀρθός (orthos) meant "straight, upright"). Orthros is rarely used as a baby name in modern times, but it may be suitable for parents who are interested in Greek mythology and wish to name their child after a character from the myth.
