Orestheus
Ὀρεσθεύς(Ancient Greek)
Orestheus Name meanings & History
From the Greek name Ορεσθεύς (Orestheus), which meant "mountainous" or "of the mountains". According to Greek mythology, Orestheus was the founder of a city in Arcadia. Probably a more elaborate form of Orestes, which is ultimately derived from Greek όρος (oros) meaning "mountain, hill". It is at least quite unlikely that this is a compound name where the second element is derived from Greek θεος (theos) meaning "god", because then the name would have been spelled as Ὀρεσθεος (Orestheos) in Greek. Orestheus was the name of two characters in Greek mythology, one of them being a king of Arcadia. Orestheus is a name that is more commonly used in Greece and other Greek-speaking countries than it is elsewhere. It is not a name commonly used in Western cultures, but it has a strong presence in Greek mythology and history.
