Usage:
Meanings: Derived from the Arabic muhammad (praiseworthy), which is from h amida (to praise). The name, one of the most popular in the Muslim world, was borne by the Arabic Prophet and founder of Islam, Muhammad ibn-‘Abd-Allah ibn-‘Abd-al-Muttalib (570-632). After receiving his first revelation on Mount Hira in 610, he began denouncing the existing social and moral conditions. After twelve years of effort, and seeing only a small number of converts but much persecution, he and his followers traveled from Mecca to Yathrib (which he renamed Medina), a migration known today as the Hegira. He soon established himself as ruler of the city and began his conquest over the Jews, and eventually of Mecca. Muhammad died in 632, seeing his religion of Islam become successfully established.
