Foremost, he was a man of peace, and is remembered for his deep concern for the underprivileged masses and for his protest against untouchability. He set up many programs for education and rural reconstruction, and set out to improve hygiene and living conditions for the poor. He was leader of the Indian National Congress and worked for Indian independence, being jailed many times for organizing satyagraha (passive resistance) movements and initiating civil disobedience.
