Lussi Name meanings & History

Germanic (Swiss-German). Lussi is a diminutive form of the German name "Ludmilla", meaning "graceful people" or "beloved by the people". It is also sometimes associated with the German word "lüstern", meaning "lustful" or "passionate". Probably from the Latin lux meaning "light". In Sweden, she was in all likelihood the personification of the winter solstice - called 'lussinatta' - that was later absorbed into the newer tradition of 'Luciadagen' (honouring the Catholic Saint Lucy of Syracuse). Subesequently used from circa 1700s as a variant of Lucia; it is not a common name today. Lussi is primarily used as a baby girl name.
