Meanings: Popular name thought to be derived from the Arabic hajara (to forsake, to emigrate). The name was borne by the Egyptian concubine of Ibrahim, given to him by his barren wife Sarah. Hajar bore Ibrahim a son, Isma'il. After Sarah finally conceived and gave birth to Isaac, she had Hajar and Isma‘il abandoned in the desert. Tradition relates that in her desperate attempt to find water, she ran between the mounts Al-Safa and Al-Marwa near Mecca several times. God took pity on them and uncovered the well of Zamzam, saving their lives. To this day, part of the Muslim pilgrimage rites include walking the distance from Al-Safa to Al-Marwa seven times and drinking from the well of Zamzam. Hajar is revered as the “Mother of the Arabs.” Var: Hagir. (HAH-JAHR)
