The name Godred has multiple meanings, depending on its origin. In Old Norse, it means "God's Peace," while in Manx, it means "King of the Isles.". Latinized form of Guðrøðr, an Old Norse cognate of Godfrey. It was borne by three Norse-Gaelic kings of the Isle of Man, including Godred Crovan (d. 1095), King of Dublin and the Isles, and his grandson Godred Olafsson (d. 1187). It was also used by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry for a character in 'Mountain Engines' (1964), part of his 'Railway Series' of children's stories. Godred is a traditional name that has seen some use in the Manx community, but is not commonly used elsewhere.
