Garðar Name meanings & History
Garðar is a derivative of the Old Norse name Garðarr which means "enclosure" or "dweller in an enclosure". Derived from the Old Norse elements gerðr meaning "enclosure, yard, protection" and arr meaning "warrior". Garðarr Svavarsson (sometimes spelled Garðar) was a Swede who was the first Scandinavian to stay over winter in Iceland, in the 860s. He named it Garðarshólmur (Garðar's Island) after himself, and the country bore the name for a while. Garðar is primarily used as a given name for boys in Iceland.
