Fredonia
Fredonia Name meanings & History
This name is of uncertain origin, although it is thought to be an American name. The meaning of the name Fredonia is not clear. Some sources suggest that it may be a combination of the names Fred and Donia, while others believe it may be a variant of the name Freda, meaning "peaceful ruler.". Apparently from the English word freedom combined with a Latinate suffix (perhaps modeled on Caledonia), given infrequently as an American name in the 19th century in reference to the United States of America. It is the name of several U.S. towns and cities, the oldest of which appears to be Fredonia, New York (1820), as well as a short-lived republic (established in eastern Texas in 1826 by a group of white settlers and Cherokee Indians). Fredonia is a rare name and may not be commonly used in modern times.
