Meanings: Derived from the Greek Dorothea, a compound name composed of the elements doron (gift) and theos (God): hence, “gift of God.” The name was borne by a 4th-century saint martyred under Diocletian. Sentenced to be beheaded, she was mocked by a lawyer named Theophilus, who asked her to send flowers and fruit from heaven.
