Curley derives from the Gaelic word "corcach", meaning "curl haired." It refers to people who are curly haired, and is also used as a nickname for someone who has curly hair. Transferred use of the surname Curley or else from an English surname of Norman origin, which may have been from a French place name or perhaps from a nickname meaning "curlew (a bird)" (see also Curly). It was used by John Steinbeck for a character in his novella 'Of Mice and Men' (1937). Curley can be used as both a first name and a surname.
