They lived in peaceful coexistence with whites for nearly ten years, until the peace was destroyed in 1861 when Lieutenant George Bascom refused to believe that Cochise had not kidnaped a white child. Ensuing bloodshed between the two groups was great. In 1872 peace was restored when the Chiricahua were guaranteed their own reservation in the Chiricahua Mountains. (KO-CHEES)
