Together, the name Chonghua can be translated to mean "blooming with great promise" or "blossoming with excellence". From the characters 重 (chóng, meaning “double”, “layered”) and 华 (huá, meaning “flower”, “luxuriance”). This was the supposed personal name of Emperor Shun, one of the Five Emperors said to have ruled in the early days of Chinese civilization. He was especially known as a paragon of filial piety, and was chosen by the preceding ruler, Yao, to be his successor. Ehuang and Nüying were his wives, while Xiaoming and Zhuguang were his daughters. Chonghua is a unisex name that can be used for both boys and girls. It is most commonly used in Chinese-speaking countries but has recently been adopted by parents in Western countries.
