The name was borne by a physician of the 2nd century B.C. who revised the Agnivesha Samhita, which came to be known as the Charaka Samhita, a compilation of medical information which defines the causes and symptoms of disease. It is an in-depth work, covering the subjects of anatomy, etiology, physiology, pathology, treatment, objectives, the influences of age and season, physicians, the use of medicines and appliances, procedure and sequence, conception, birth, and physical deformities.
