Meaning
Polish form of the old Irish name Brighid, which is believed to be derived from the Gaelic brigh (strength). The name was made popular in Europe by the fame of St. Birgitta (1302-73), the patron saint of Sweden. A noblewoman and mother of eight children, she founded the Order of the Brigittines after her husband’s death, and traveled to Rome, where she attempted to reform religious life.
