Ammonaria Name meanings & History

Derived from the name of the Egyptian god Ammon combined with the suffix -αρία (-aria). Alternatively it may be a Latinized form of Ammonarion. Also compare Ammonia, which was an epithet of the Greek goddess Hera. This name was borne by a young girl who was martyred during the persecutions of the Roman emperor Decius (3rd century). It also appears in Gustave Flaubert's novel The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1874), where Ammonaria is a friend of Anthony's sister.
