Amalaswintha was a queen of the Ostrogoths, known for her political acumen and tragic end. She was the daughter of Theodoric the Great and married her first cousin Theodahad to secure the Ostrogothic throne. After Theodahad's death in 536, she had to struggle for power against her cousin and regent, Witiges. She was eventually deposed and murdered on the orders of her successor, Theodahad's nephew and cousin, Totila.
