2.) AGNESE (Female)
Usage: Italian
Meanings: Popular name derived from the Greek Hagne, which is from hagnos (chaste, pure, sacred). The name was borne by St. Agnese, a thirteen-year-old Roman of the 3rd century who, after consecrating her virginity to Christ, refused marriage and would not sacrifice to pagan idols. She was stripped and sent to a brothel. After an attempt to burn her alive failed, she was killed by being stabbed in the throat with a sword. Agnese is similar in form to the Latin agna (lamb), which led to the lamb being adopted as her attribute. Var: Agnesca, Agnete. (AHG-NAY-SAY)
