Aeëtes Name meanings & History
Son of the sun god Helios, king of Colchis. Latinized form of Greek Αἰήτης (Aiêtês), possibly derived from Greek αἴητος (aiêtos) "terrible, mighty". In Greek mythology Aeëtes was a king of Colchis in Asia Minor (modern Georgia) and the father of Medea. He was also the brother of Circe and Pasiphae. During his reign, Phrixus brought the Golden Fleece to Colchis; it was Aeëtes who owned the fleece which Jason and the Argonauts sought in their quest, and eventually acquired. The name Aeëtes is most commonly used in literature, art, and mythology.
